The city of Bastrop is located about thirty miles southeast of Austin, it is part of the Greater Austin metropolitan area with easy access to Houston, San Antonio, and Dallas.

The Bastrop Independent School District (BISD) covers the City of Bastrop and much of the surrounding area. With the beautiful Colorado River running through the city, it is conveniently situated just 30 miles southeast of Austin, 100 miles northeast of San Antonio, and 130 miles west of Houston.

Bastrop ISD serves nearly 11,000 students from the communities of Bastrop, Cedar Creek, Paige, Red Rock, Rockne, and vast rural areas of Bastrop County. There are currently two comprehensive high schools, an early college high school, and a nontraditional online high school. Two middle schools, two intermediate schools, and six elementary schools. Bastrop ISD also operates two licensed childcare facilities at Cedar Creek Elementary and Emile Elementary.

With the implementation of House Bill 5 passed by the Texas Legislature in 2013, Bastrop ISD has created a number of Career Pathways for students, including automotive, agriculture, business, construction, culinary arts, health sciences, and STEM-based programs. In the future, EMT, AWS welding, and AutoCAD certifications will also be offered.

Bastrop’s refreshing setting in the heart of Central Texas’ Lost Pines Forest eco-region and extensive Colorado River frontage create plentiful recreational opportunities. These include kayaking, biking and bird watching. Outdoor enthusiasts also take advantage of three world-class, 18-hole golf courses; two state parks; McKinney Roughs Nature Preserve; and Lake Bastrop for boating, fishing, and camping.

Established in 1832 as one of Stephen F. Austin’s original colonies, Bastrop has more than 130 registered historic sites and beautifully restored 19th and early 20th century homes. Its picturesque Main Street downtown district bustles with an eclectic mix of retail shops and restaurants. In 2010, the National Trust for Historic Preservation named Bastrop one of its Dozen Distinctive Destinations. It has been recognized as a Texas Cultural Arts District by the Texas Commission on the Arts since 2012.

City of Bastrop’s parks system includes one pocket park, three neighborhood parks, two community parks, and five special use parks serving residents of the City and the surrounding county. These parks primarily serve “active” recreational uses such as football, soccer, t-ball, baseball, softball, basketball, tennis and sand volleyball;
but, can also serve other pursuits such as walking, boating, fishing, and wildlife viewing. City parks include accessory facilities such as picnic shelters, concessions, restrooms, playgrounds, and other specialized site-specific facilities. 

City of Bastrop Parks & Recreation Department maintains over 65 acres of parkland and manages recreational events & community programs. Citizens and visitors can enjoy family outings at the various parks. Our two larger and most popular parks, Bob Bryant Park and Fisherman’s Park, set along the Colorado River; these parks are equipped with fishing docks, nature trails, and boat/canoe ramps.
