Bandera County is a county located in the Hill Country area of Texas. Bandera County is close to San Antonio to the southeast and includes Bandera Pass in the northeast, Medina Lake in the southeast, and vast natural areas to the west. If you are looking for a ranch in the Texas Hill Country with a warm and friendly atmosphere, Bandera County just might be a area that you will find interesting.  With a smaller population that is different than the hustle and bustle of many areas nowadays, Bandera County is a pleasant alternative that is commutable for those than want to work in a larger town or city such as San Antonio and still have a place with the country feel.  It's remarkable that being founded over 170 years ago that the county has been able to maintain a small town status.  With a population of just over 20,000, Bandera County has many natural highlights that provide enjoyment to both residents and visitors like the Lost Maples State Natural Area opened in 1979, the Hill Country State Natural Area opened in 1984, the Love Creek Preserve opened in 2000,  Medina Lake, and the Medina River which provides live water recreational activities. 

What is Bandera Texas known for?

Bandera County is famous for its beautiful Hill Country scenery, and for being officially recognized in Texas as the “Cowboy Capital of the World”. Residents of Bandera County are primarily engaged in economic activities surrounding ranching and farming, hunting, tourism, recreational fishing, and forestry. Geographically, the area is situated on the Edwards Plateau, consisting of limestone rocks and sandy ground. The limestone hills and excess of groundwater makes for relatively lush surroundings defined by oak, walnut, and cherry trees.

Luckily, Bandera County has a number of good access routes, including State Highway 16 which runs from the north through Medina and Bandera towards San Antonio; and State Highway 173, which also comes from Kerrville, through Bandera Pass and Bandera, before heading south towards Hondo. Route 337 runs west from Medina, connecting to Vanderpool and Route 187 at the Sabinal River. Bandera County is known as the Cowboy Capital of the World as has been officially recognized as such by the Texas Legislature since 2016.  It's not unusual when visiting Bandera to see cowboys riding their horses down Main Street or the Longhorn on Main Street posing for photos with visitors some even sitting on his back. Surrounding area roads in the county are loved by both cyclists and motorcycle riders because of the beautiful views that wind through the Hill Country with dramatic changes in elevation. Ranch to Market Road 337, also known as part of the three sisters road combination, is particularly known as one of the motorcycle touring roads in the United States. While the town of Bandera is the county seat, other smaller unincorporated communities that are in Bandera County include Medina, Pipe Creek, Tarpley, and Vanderpool, all which offer the same small town feel. 

Bandera County is also known for its two state nature areas, Lost Maples and Hill Country, as well as a large conservancy at Love Creek Ranch. Residents also enjoy Medina Lake, which is large enough to provide facilities for boating, camping, and fishing. Within the various towns of Bandera County there is the Bandera Natural History Museum, Frontier Times Museum, Bandera County Courthouse, and the multitude of scenic drives that are available for anyone to enjoy. Add to this the many restaurants and visitor focused businesses, and there’s always something to see and do in Bandera County. While in Bandera County canoe, or kayak down the Medina River, and catch all sorts of fish from bass to alligator gar.

Schools and Education

Students in Bandera County are served by a number of Independent School Districts. Northside and Utopia serve students within small areas to the east and west respectively, while the majority of the county falls under either the Medina ISD or the Bandera ISD.
